Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read a 4-band resistor? +
The first two bands are digits (tens and ones), the third band is the multiplier (number of zeros to add), and the fourth band is tolerance. For example, red-violet-orange-gold is 27 x 1000 = 27k ohms with 5% tolerance.
What is the difference between 4-band and 5-band resistors? +
5-band resistors have three significant digit bands instead of two, giving more precision. The first three bands are digits, the fourth is the multiplier, and the fifth is tolerance. They are common in precision (1% tolerance) resistors.
Which end do I start reading from? +
Start reading from the band closest to one end of the resistor. The tolerance band (gold or silver) is usually spaced slightly farther from the others and should be on the right. If unclear, the first band is never gold or silver.
What do gold and silver bands mean? +
As a multiplier, gold means x0.1 and silver means x0.01. As the tolerance band, gold indicates 5% tolerance and silver indicates 10%. These are the two most common tolerance values for through-hole resistors.
