Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for percentage change? +
Percentage change = ((New Value - Old Value) / |Old Value|) x 100. A positive result is an increase, and a negative result is a decrease.
What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference? +
Percentage change measures the shift from an original value to a new value. Percentage difference compares two values without treating either as the starting point, using the average of both as the denominator.
Can percentage change exceed 100%? +
Yes. If a value more than doubles, the percentage increase exceeds 100%. For example, going from 50 to 150 is a 200% increase. There is no upper limit.
What happens when the old value is zero? +
Percentage change is undefined when the old value is zero because you would be dividing by zero. In that case, you can only describe the absolute difference, not a relative change.
