Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate how much fuel you need and what it will cost for any trip
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip? +
Divide your trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency (MPG) to get gallons needed, then multiply by the price per gallon. For example, a 300-mile trip at 25 MPG uses 12 gallons. At $3.50/gallon, the total cost is $42.00.
What is the difference between MPG and L/100km? +
MPG (miles per gallon) is used in the US and measures how many miles you can drive on one gallon of fuel. L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) is used in most other countries and measures how many liters of fuel are needed to drive 100 km. Lower L/100km means better efficiency, while higher MPG means better efficiency.
How do I find my car's fuel efficiency? +
Check your car's window sticker, owner's manual, or look it up on fueleconomy.gov. You can also calculate it by filling your tank, driving until near empty, then dividing miles driven by gallons to refill. Most cars get between 20-35 MPG.
Does the round trip option double the cost? +
Yes, enabling the round trip toggle doubles the total distance, which doubles both the fuel needed and the total cost. This is useful for planning trips where you need to drive back to your starting point.
How can I reduce my fuel costs? +
Drive at steady speeds (55-65 mph is most efficient), keep tires properly inflated, remove excess weight from your vehicle, avoid aggressive acceleration and braking, use cruise control on highways, and keep your engine maintained. These habits can improve fuel efficiency by 10-30%.
