Frequently Asked Questions
What EXIF data do JPEGs typically contain? +
JPEGs can store camera make and model, date taken, GPS coordinates, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and software used to edit the image.
Does removing EXIF data reduce file size? +
Usually only slightly. EXIF data is typically a few kilobytes. The main image data makes up the bulk of the file. However, some images with large embedded thumbnails can shrink noticeably.
Why would I want to strip EXIF before sharing photos? +
EXIF often includes GPS coordinates showing exactly where a photo was taken. Removing it before posting online prevents people from pinpointing your location from the image file.
Do PNG files have EXIF data? +
PNGs use a different metadata format (tEXt/iTXt chunks) and rarely contain EXIF. Some image editors write limited metadata to PNGs, but it is far less common than with JPEGs.
