Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the 7-year rule wrong? +
The 7x rule assumes aging is linear, but dogs mature much faster in their first two years. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 30-year-old human in terms of biological maturity. After that, aging slows down significantly.
How does the logarithmic formula work? +
The 2019 UCSD study found that dog aging follows an epigenetic clock based on DNA methylation. The formula is 16 x ln(dog age) + 31, which accounts for rapid early development and slower aging later. It was developed by comparing methylation patterns between dogs and humans.
Does dog size affect aging? +
Yes. Large breeds tend to age faster and have shorter lifespans than small breeds. A Great Dane is considered senior at 6-7 years, while a Chihuahua may not reach senior status until 10-11 years. This calculator uses the general logarithmic formula, which is most accurate for medium-sized dogs.
How is cat aging different from dog aging? +
Cats reach maturity at around 2 years old, equivalent to about 24 human years. After that, each cat year adds roughly 4 human years. Indoor cats tend to live longer than outdoor cats, with averages of 12-18 years versus 5-10 years.
